Why is the 8th Pay Commission trending now?

The Commission's official calendar confirms a Chennai visit on 7 and 8 September 2026. Employee and pensioner organisations are using the consultation process to present demands on pay, allowances, pensions and service conditions, which has renewed searches for salary-hike and fitment-factor updates.

Has the fitment factor been fixed?

No. Figures circulating in news reports and employee-body proposals are demands or scenarios, not an official government-approved fitment factor. The Commission is still gathering evidence and stakeholder submissions before making recommendations.

What is the official timeline?

The Government of India constituted the 8th Central Pay Commission on 3 November 2025 and gave it 18 months to submit its recommendations. The Cabinet's Terms of Reference say the Commission may also issue interim reports if it considers them necessary.

When could revised pay take effect?

The government's Cabinet note says that, based on the usual ten-year Pay Commission cycle, the effect of the recommendations would normally be expected from 1 January 2026. That wording does not by itself confirm when revised salaries or arrears will actually be paid; implementation requires recommendations and subsequent government decisions.

What should employees watch next?

The Commission's published schedule lists further consultations after Chennai, including Puducherry on 9 September and Chandigarh on 16–18 September 2026. The most important future milestones are the Commission's recommendations, any interim report, and the government's formal decision on implementation.
